It is with deep concern, outrage and solidarity with women and civil society in Honduras that the Central American Women’s Fund and the Global Fund for Women launch this fundraising opportunity to financially support two projects.
Your donation will support a joint effort by the International Feminist Radio (FIRE), Las Cattrachas (a women’s rights organization led by young women) and the Feminist Resistance Alliance in their study of media bias in the wake of the coup. They will also analyze the ways media in other countries have framed the crisis and whether the perspectives of women are included.
The second project, by Women’s Forum for Life (Foro de Mujeres por la Vida) is working to secure women’s safety during public protests. They provide assistance for women who are victims of repression by the armed forces and promote safe and open forums for discussion and analysis of the current socio-political situation in Honduras.
In late June, military-backed leaders seized power; since then, political unrest and violence have escalated. The preliminary report of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights has confirmed brutal repression by police and military during peaceful demonstrations, including the murder and violations of freedoms of movement, association and speech.
Honduran Feminists have been organizing in defense of women’s rights for decades. Immediately after the coup, women organized and now find themselves on the receiving end of the billy clubs, pistols, rapes, and sexual harassment.
