Ashoka Fellow Sandra Aguebor of the Lady Mechanic Initiative in Nigeria is among the changemakers featured in a new electronic book titled ‘Stories of Change.’ Established in 1997 in Lagos, LMI is a Global Fund grantee partner since 2005 and trains women in auto mechanics – an unconventional field for women in Nigeria, as in many countries where auto mechanics is a male dominated vocation.
The Lady Mechanic Initiative (LMI) was established in Lagos, Nigeria in 1997 to train women in auto mechanics as a strategy to promote women’s economic empowerment and increase women’s participation in lucrative, male-dominated professions. They especially make these opportunities available for widows, sex workers, young mothers, and out-of-school youth. Their training also includes workshops on enterprise management and financial literacy in order to prepare its trainees in all aspects of business.
