Global Fund Grantee Asociación de Mujeres Meretrices de la Argentina [Women Sex Workers Association of Argentina (AMMAR)] won the 2010 Red Ribbon Award for its community-based response to sexual and reproductive health. Through UNAIDS, the Red Ribbon Award recognizes creative and sustainable community-based responses to the AIDS epidemic.
AMMAR is among 25 community organizations worldwide selected for the award through a community-led process. Winners receive $5,000 each and are attending this week's XVIIIth International AIDS Conference in Vienna to showcase their work. The 25 winners, representing 17 countries, were selected by a group of civil society experts in the community response to HIV for having demonstrated the most remarkable efforts in terms of innovation, impact, sustainability, strategic partnerships, gender sensitivity and social inclusion.
Meretrices de la Argentina (AMMAR), is a network of 15,000 sex workers that has successfully advocated for the adoption of municipal codes and ordinances in Argentina that protect and promote the rights of sex workers. The group actively promotes the defense and respect of sex workers' human rights and labor, and since its founding, AMMAR has also become a major part of the national AIDS response in Argentina.
