The 2010 Gruber Women's Rights prize of $500,000 has been awarded to longtime GFW grantee partner CLADEM (Comité de América Latina y El Caribe para la Defensa de los Derechos de la Mujer/Latin American and Caribbean Committee for the Defense of Women’s Rights). CLADEM shares the prize with the US-based Center for Reproductive Rights for advancing women's reproductive health in many countries.
Founded in 1987 in Costa Rica, CLADEM is a regional network of feminist organizations and activists that promotes, monitors, and defends women’s rights as human rights. CLADEM’s network of women’s organizations and activists monitor their Latin American and Caribbean government’s compliance with international agreements and advocate for legal reforms based on research and collaborative action.
