Sisters in Islam, a Global Fund grantee group in Malaysia, has recently been attacked by Islamists both inside the government and from oppostion parties. The group works to advocate women's rights within the framework of Islam. Zainah Anwar, the director of the group, recently gave an interview to The Star, one of Malaysia's largest English language papers.
"We were singled out because we are a group of Muslim women and men who are a part of civil society that stands in the way of a political project to rewrite the Constitution and the social contract to establish an Islamist political and social order... in order to demonise and delegitimise us."
