Solidarity With Our Sisters in Chile

An 8.8 magnitude earthquake struck Santiago and its environs February 27, 2010. The Board and staff of the Global Fund for Women stand in solidarity with our sisters and colleagues in Chile and Hawaii.

Dear Sisters in Chile,

The Board and staff of the Global Fund for Women would like to express our collective sadness at the destruction and loss of life that has resulted from the earthquake in Chile this past Saturday.  We have learned of the tragic loss of life and physical devastation, through the media and our friends on the ground. The Global Fund is writing to express our solidarity with you during this difficult time. We do not know to what extent you have been affected, but we can only hope that you, your relatives, friends, and colleagues are safe. Please send us an e-mail, if you can, to let us know how you are.

As you know, the Global Fund for Women's mission as a grantmaking organization is to strengthen women's organizing and women's groups in long-term efforts to advance the human rights of women and girls. The Global Fund is not a relief organization and does not have the capacity to provide direct aid in emergency situations. However, we do encourage current grantees in the region, who have been affected by the current natural disasters and their aftermath, to use the funds for whatever activities they believe are most critical at this time. In the coming months, we will be accepting grant applications to address the gender-specific needs in rebuilding and reorganizing communities affected by the devastation.

At your convenience, we would like your advice on how best to support women and girls in the affected areas. Please send us your thoughts on the situation of women and girl survivors, and guide us on what you feel should be Global Fund's priorities in its long-term response to such disasters across the region. Do let us know if there is any other way we can be of assistance.

Queridas hermanas en Chile,

El Consejo Directivo y el personal del Fondo Global para Mujeres queremos expresar nuestra tristeza colectiva por la destrucción y la pérdida de vidas que han resultado del terremoto en Chile el sábado pasado. Hemos escuchado de la trágica pérdida de vidas y de la devastación física, a través de los medios y de nuestras amigas en la tierra. El Fondo Global está escribiendo para expresar nuestra solidaridad con ustedes durante este tiempo difícil.  No sabemos en qué medida les ha afectado, pero esperamos que ustedes, sus parientes, sus amigos, y sus colegas estén seguros.  Por favor envíenos un correo electrónico, si pueden, para dejarnos saber como están.

Como ustedes saben, la misión del Fondo Global para Mujeres como una organización que otorga fondos, es consolidar organizaciones y grupos de mujeres en esfuerzos de largo plazo para avanzar los derechos humanos de mujeres y niñas. El Fondo Global no es una organización de socorro y no tiene la capacidad de proporcionar la ayuda directa en situaciones de emergencia.  Sin embargo, animamos a nuestras contrapartes en la región, que han sido afectadas por los actuales desastres naturales y sus consecuencias, a utilizar los fondos para cualquiera actividad que crean sea la más crítica en este tiempo. En los meses que vienen, aceptaremos propuestas para abordar las necesidades género-específicas en la reconstrucción y la reorganización de las comunidades afectadas por la devastación.

Cuando les resulte conveniente, quisiéramos su consejo sobre cómo apoyar mejor a las mujeres y a las niñas en las áreas afectadas.  Por favor envíenos sus pensamientos sobre la situación de mujeres y niñas sobrevivientes, y diríjanos en lo que ustedes sienten deben ser las prioridades del Fondo Global en su respuesta de largo plazo a tales desastres a través de la región.  Avísenos si hay cualquier otra manera en que les podamos apoyar.
