Grantee Highlights Lack of Laws Against Marital Rape in Bahrain

Mariam Al Ruwai, president of Bahrain Women Union, notes in a recent Women’s International Perspective article about marital rape and sexual abuse in Bahrain.  Al Ruwai says, “There is an average of 4,000 marriages taking place in Bahrain annually and only an average of 1,000 divorces. That doesn’t mean we don’t have marital problems, but many women fear the maltreatment they might face by conservative judges if they sue their husbands [for divorce].”  The article also discusses societal taboos that deny married women’s rights.
