Overcoming a Legacy of Neglect in Mauritania

grantee-mena.jpgHistorically, Mauritanian women’s rights organizations have had little contact or exposure to information, aid, and support from the international community. A military coup in August 2008 left women’s groups in an even more precarious position. That year, the Global Fund staff took our first-ever visit to Mauritania, and it was an eye-opener. Poverty, illiteracy, violence, lack of medical resources, and the lingering existence of slavery make for a difficult landscape.

The Association des Femmes Chefs de Famille (AFCF) advocates for women’s legal rights and seeks to empower marginalized women, particularly divorced women and widows. AFCF has supported 2,600 women’s work cooperatives, trained girls in various trades, offered literacy classes, and campaigned for a higher percentage of women in elected office. AFCF used a recent $22,000 Global Fund grant to begin creating a network of women’s rights organizations that can advocate for policy changes. It will launch a dynamic campaign to transform the national family code and ensure its conformance to international women’s rights conventions.
