The Board and staff of the Global Fund for Women would like to express our collective sadness at the destruction and loss of life that has resulted from the floods that have struck Khyber-Pakhtoonkhwa (formerly the North Western Frontier Province) and other parts of Pakistan these past few days. We have learned of the tragic loss of life and physical devastation, through the media and our friends on the ground.

Against the backdrop of the ongoing discussions in the Zimbabwean Parliament on numerous bills, Aziza Abemba from Women Self Promotion Movement (WSPM), a GFW grantee partner based in the capital Harare, shared with us some critical insights. WSPM works with refugee women and girls from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Rwanda, and Burundi. The group works to promote women’s leadership, entrepreneurship, civic participation, and training in conflict resolution and domestic violence prevention. Read this vital analysis:

Betsy Hoody from the ECIS Program Team published an opinion piece in Foreign Policy in Focus that provides a critical gender perspective on the conflict in Kyrgyzstan. The piece calls attention to the well-coordinated efforts of Kyrgyz women's groups in response to the recent escalation in violence, as well as the need to support grassroots organizing as a way to achieving effective solutions.

The article notes that through grassroots organizing, "women are addressing the root causes of the violence: years of unaddressed mistrust and separation among ethnic groups, as well as crumbling social infrastructure and welfare systems." Read the full article
