It is 3 months since the Tsunami, and life in general goes on. Rehabilitation programs are very slow..........The delay in getting permanent houses is causing a lot of problems both health wise and psycho-social. There is a lot of sickness among these displaced people. The government has the problem of finding land for resettling people where villages have been washed away. There is a lot of frustration but slowly we see signs of progress.
-April 28, 2005 email from Pearl Stephen,
Director, Women's Development Centre, Sri Lanka Immediately after the earthquake and tsunami that swept across the Indian Ocean in December 2004, the Global Fund for Women reached out to all of our grantees in the affected regions from Asia to Africa. Since January 2005, the Global Fund has awarded $104,000 in tsunami relief to 15 women's organizations in India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka and Thailand. In the days and weeks following the tsunami, many of these groups provided basic and desperately needed relief to their communities in the form of food, water, medical supplies, and shelter. They are now working to ensure that women are included in longterm reconstruction processes and that the human rights of women are not ignored.
