Rebekka van Roemburg is an internationally-operating social development expert. She currently co-leads the SheDecides support unit in London. SheDecides is a global movement that seeks to create a world where every girl and woman can decide about her body, her life, and her future, without question. SheDecides started as a global fundraising initiative in response to the reinstatement and expansion of the Global Gag Rule in early 2017. Many countries, prominent leaders, organizations, and individuals have since joined the movement. Throughout her many years in the development field, Rebekka has become convinced of the need to both shift the point of gravity to Southern organisations and effectively link local initiatives with global debates. In SheDecides that is exactly what she is doing.
Before 2017, Rebekka worked for 16 years with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the areas of gender equality, education, and sexual and reproductive health and rights. She lived and worked in Egypt, Tanzania, and Yemen and as a consultant undertook assignments in Mali, Uganda, Kenya, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. In Tanzania Rebekka ran her own consulting firm, bringing local and foreign expertise together.
Rebekka has a master’s degree in Human Geography of Developing Countries. She is part of the global THNK (school for creative leadership) community. Rebekka wants every girl and woman to fulfill her potential, and believes that now is the time for the silent majority to stand up for women and girls so that they can decide about their own lives.
